Czechia Attracts More Foreign ERC Applicants under Horizon Europe than Poland, Hungary and Slovakia Combined

25/05/2026

Are Czech ERC applicants more successful at home or abroad — and by how much do their success rates differ? Did you know that the Czech Republic attracts more foreign ERC applicants under Horizon Europe than Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia combined?

Those who have been following ERC-related trends in Europe over the long term will probably not be surprised by some of the conclusions of this new TC Prague analysis. Drawing on data from the eCORDA database, the study systematically examines the relationship between grant success and the international mobility of ERC applicants in a broader European context. The statistical findings suggest that applicants’ success in competitions for these prestigious grants may be linked to the nature of the research environment in which proposals are prepared and submitted. At the same time, the analysis points to significant differences between Western Europe and the EU-13 countries.
